Agriculture Project

The goal of the agriculture project is to provide significant assistance and support for the development of agriculture in Congo to the point it becomes a sustainable source of income and nutrition.

"Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food? If one of you says to him "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed, " but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?" James 2:15-16

Our vision is to bring glory to God and blessings to our neighbors by using sustainable agriculture to help the powerless help themselves. What better way to show God's love than to demonstrate our care and concern for God's people?

Sustainable farming has been the focus using animal traction to allow their people a way to produce food and income. Modern farm machinery is not available in rural Africa and could not be properly maintained. Draft animals have been the key, similar to "Amish" style farming here in the U.S. These projects have far-reaching possibilities in helping alleviate malnutrition in the Congo.

In 2015, our first well was drilled providing fresh water for the people and farm in Diengenga. Fresh water is essential and this capital project was successful through the generous gifts of many persons. In July 2019, solar panels were installed to power the pump for the existing well. The farm now has water for irrigation throughout the year, and the village residents can access the well that has been dormant due to lack of funding for generator fuel.

Bishop Daniel Lunge appointed a new farm coordinator in May, 2019. John Pierre has extensive education and experience in agriculture and has a huge vision for the expansion of the farm. Multiple new crops have been planted and recently the village chief allowed the Methodist mission station to purchase additional land for animal grazing and crop extension.

The donation of two grinders from Kent Island UMC in 2018 has provided a new income source for the farm. Most local residents grow rice or maize or soy but do not have access to grinders within walking distance, since none own automobiles or trucks. The husk and shells from the vegetables also supply food for the farm animals.
