When Donna and Jonathan Baker visited Diengenga, in Central Congo in June 2019, they saw the devastation of malnourishment upon children and their families. What excited them was that the staff of the UM Medical Center had begun their own nutrition program, with a 3-month grant from Global Health. Instead of cooking porridge for the children to come and eat, the families receive the nutritious powder, which is a blend of maize and soy, to take home and cook for their children.
Although this project is not an official project of the Congo Partnership, the Bakers were so inspired by the medical center's vision and passion for the children, they feel called to share this information.
The most exciting aspect of the nutrition program was an initiative by the clinic leadership to create a community garden on land within the Methodist Mission Station, which is the village of Diengenga. All families participating in the nutrition program must help at the community garden growing nutritious vegetables that they can cook to feed their families. The participants reflected joy for the program's existence and pride that they are not just receiving a charitable gift...they are participating!
