Children's Ministry of Kinshasa
Origins, Goals, and Distinctives
The children’s ministry began in Kinshasa in 2019 within the United Methodist Church. Its development was influenced by the realities of a large and rapidly growing urban environment. Unlike the rural-based ministry in Sankuru, this initiative was designed specifically to address the complex social, economic, and spiritual needs of children living in a major city.

Urban Ministry Objectives
The goals of the Kinshasa children’s ministry included creating safe and nurturing spaces where children from all religious backgrounds feel valued and are able to encounter the gospel. The ministry promoted spiritual formation through discipleship while also addressing holistic needs, spiritual, educational, and social. A notable feature was the establishment of Hope Clubs for Children, which provided structured environments for learning, fellowship, and spiritual growth.
Additionally, the ministry emphasized inclusion by offering training and support for children with disabilities, ensuring that all children could fully participate in the life of the church.
Intentional Outreach
This urban ministry in Kinshasa requires more intentional outreach strategies, structured programming, leadership development, and engagement across diverse and dispersed populations. The urban setting brings significant challenges, including high population mobility that makes consistent attendance and follow-up difficult, economic hardship that limits resources for sustaining programs, and urban distractions such as media, peer pressure, and street culture that compete for children’s attention. Building trust in the less personal urban environment also takes time.
